The brain cells produce electrical
energy that goes to the nervous system. This activates the muscles in the body. The brain of a patient that has epilepsy sometimes will fail to control this electrical energy. When a large burst of energy is release this causes a
epileptic seizure. There are three different types of epilepsy, Grand Mal,
Petit Mal, and
Psychomotor.
Grand Mal
epileptic seizures only last a few minutes than the patient goes into a deep sleep. The patient will have muscle jerks and will fall unless they are supported. This is the most
dramatic type of epilepsy.
Petit Mal
epileptic seizures mostly occur in children. The patient may appear confused or have a blank/lost look on there face. The patient will lose awareness to the surroundings around them for a few seconds.
Psychomotor epileptic seizures. The patient will suddenly roam around, tugging at their clothes and will act withdrawn and
behaves strangely.
Any of these
epileptic seizures can happen at any time of the day. Doctors
precribe drugs to the patients. The drug is called
anticolulsants. It reduces the number of seizures or will prevent them. The
earlier you start getting treated for epilepsy, the better the results. About half of 1 percent of the world has epilepsy.
